Over the course of a career that’s lasted almost forty years - and that’s not allowing for an eight-year break after an initial split in 1976 - Deep Purple have cemented their position as one of the most influential rock and roll bands in the history of the genre. Furthermore, they’re considered genuine pioneers of both hard rock and heavy metal after having moved away from initial roots in progressive rock, and have the commercial clout to back up their towering status within the rock community; they’ve sold in excess of one hundred million albums internationally. The current lineup features just one original member, Ian Paice on drums, although frontman Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover both joined the band shortly after they began, in 1969. Steve Morse, on guitar, and Don Airey on keys round out the five-piece as they stand today, and they continue to tour and record; their latest album, “Now What?!”, was released in April of 2013, and flirted with progressive metal. That album might not have been as successful as the records that defined them back in their seventies heyday - March 1972’s “Machine Head”, which features their signature song “Smoke on the Water”, frequently features on countdowns of the greatest rock records ever - but they still pack out arenas the world over; their status as bona fide rock legends has long since been secure. Read more Live reviews Deep Purple Perhaps it’s because their one and only split, in 1984, seems so long ago now, or perhaps because they lacked an iconic character of Ozzy Osbourne or Jimmy Page’s standing, but Deep Purple are the one member of the ‘unholy trinity,’ alongside Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, who seem to have the lowest public profile. Sure, they still tour arenas, but Sabbath have been playing stadiums this summer, and as for Zeppelin, the number of applications for tickets for their one-off reunion at the O2 stretched into seven figures. Quietly, though - as unsuitable a phrasing as that is - the biggest band ever to come out of Hertford are continuing to do quite nicely for themselves. Their most recent UK jaunt had them mixing things up, playing some arenas and some theatres, and doing their best to avoid accusations that they’re trading off of former glories; of the seventeen tracks making the setlist each night, seven were plucked from last year’s 'Now What?!' record. The classics made the cut, too, of course, as did all the trappings of the classic rock show - extensive soloing and plentiful crowd participation included. Stadium tours any time soon? Probably not, but if we’re talking about the preservation of their legacy, Deep Purple are certainly doing it justice. From then on they gave a blistering and thunderous performance! The visual effects and lighting were spectacular! Their stage presence was commanding and presentation very tight and spot on! I have seen Deep Purple multiple times over the years. I must say this show found them in their finest form! The crowd was ravenous to eat up every note! Detroit is the best place in the world for a concert! This tour is title,"The Long Goodbye." I sincerely hope this isn't so. Hopefully in the future they will tour as,"Hello Again!" The band was extremely tight and witnessing Steve Morse shred the guitar was worth the price of admission alone. They ripped through two hours of classics including a couple of new tunes off their latest album which was just as strong. Don't miss what may be one of your last chances to see these guys in such strong form. At my show in South Florida, Nicko McBrain from Iron Maiden came out to see the band and introduced them. Their influence can be heard throughout the Rock world and they should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Read more Report as inappropriate Besides being a fan of Deep Purple I have to criticize the show. Sorry! Mainly the sound technician did a bad work. Sound was way too loud that it was overlapping. Sometimes it was difficult to recognize the song and hear a melody. Members of the band, the musicians, worked hard and well, unfortunately, Ian Gillan has to retire. It was hard to hear him singing, he often was disappearing from stage. That, to say, in my opinion, he used to be "the Nail" of the shows with his high notes. Ian Gillian spent half the show going bejind the wall probably to get high. no encore song. Alice Cooper should have played the whole 3 hours because he was the best. always a good show. Edgar winter smoked Deep Purple. they need Ritchie blackmore back and david coverdale. Glover and pace the only stars. deep purple needs to retire for good. Read more Report as inappropriate Smashing gig! Suppirt act Cats In Space were a great surprise with their pop rock style that was heavier than expected. Europe were really good. Joey Tempest was his usual 80s flamboyant self, and the sound was cracking! Depp Purple were superb. This line-up is tight and settled, with some excellent playing in the original Purple vein. Ian Gillan looked like he'd just wandered in off his sofa, he was so chilled. They blew me and my son-in-law away last night. The new albums songs from Infinite were fantastic especially The Surprising and Birds of Prey interspersed with some old favourites such as Fireball, Perfect Strangers and Smoke on the Water. Bit disappointed no Highway Star. As much as I loved it I think it's time to call it quits for playing live - go out on a high with your new album. I remember now after seeing Deep Purple last night. What a fantastic display of musicianship by each member. At some point each of them wee featured and that's why we go! Judas Priest played before Deep Purple and blew the (non-existent) roof off the place. Their experience and chops were on full display. Deep Purple headlined and played lots of the crowd favorites. They may be old and the lineups may have changed, but if you grew up listening to this stuff, don't miss out on seeing them now. Okazją do tego stała się ich pożegnalna trasa koncertowa (rzecz bardzo ostatnio modna, żeby wspomnieć „pożegnania” Scorpions, Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, którzy na razie jako jedyni nie wracają na scenę). Tak czy inaczej trasa „End of the road” zawitała i do nas. Zmierzając do krakowskiej Tauron Areny miałem pewne wątpliwości. Przede wszystkim takie, czy hala wypełni się w całości, ponieważ do ostatniego dnia o bilety nie było wcale trudno. Druga wątpliwość to obawa o formę wokalną Paula Stanleya, ponieważ publiczność z poprzednich koncertów podejrzewała, że śpiewa on z playbacku. Zanim jednak cała czwórka stanęła na scenie, mogliśmy obserwować kunszt malarski zaproszonego przez zespół Davida Garibaldiego, który w dość ekspresyjny sposób namalował trzy obrazy. W rytm fragmentów piosenek Led Zeppelin stworzył portret Jimiego Page’a, następnie podczas miksu piosenek Black Sabbath i solowych dokonań Ozzy’ego – twarz Osbourne’a (którą namalował „do góry nogami” i która wyszła mu dość przeciętnie). Na sam koniec stworzył zaś zbiorowy portret wszystkich czterech gwiazd wieczoru – grupę Kiss z podpisem „Kraków”. Podczas jego wystąpienia zastanawiałem się jaki może być wspólny mianownik pomiędzy nim a „daniem głównym”. Odpowiedź jest banalnie prosta: twarze. Kiss malują swoje twarze, a David maluje ich twarze. Po półgodzinnym pokazie nastąpiło szybkie zwinięcie pochlapanych farbą dywaników oraz sztalugi, krótka przerwa techniczna na sprawdzenie świateł i można było odpalić zeppelinowskiego „Rock and rolla”, by już za kilkadziesiąt sekund (tuż po kultowych słowach „You wanted the best, you got the best…”) przenieść się do iście rockandrollowego cyrku. Najważniejsze jest otwarcie. I takie też było. Z początku nie było wiadomo czy skupić się na muzykach, którzy na kosmicznych platformach byli opuszczani na scenę niemal spod samego sufitu, czy na serii fajerwerków, które zapłonęły zarówno nad publicznością, jak i na scenie. Fajerwerki, petardy hukowe, żywy ogień to stały element wielu koncertów. Jednak to, co zobaczyłem podczas koncertu grupy Kiss przerosło moje najśmielsze oczekiwania. Dotychczas moim wyznacznikiem używania pirotechniki na scenie był Rammstein, jednak kissowy koncert wprowadził moje odczucia na zupełnie inny poziom. Długo jeszcze zbierałem szczękę z podłogi, zresztą nie tylko ja, ponieważ Arena – wbrew wątpliwościom – wypełniła się niemal do ostatniego miejsca. Ale żeby show było zapamiętane do końca życia to same fajerwerki nie wystarczą. Z pomocą przychodzi oprawa świetlna, która współgrała z utworami, tworząc lekko kiczowaty nastrój. Ale o to właśnie chodzi w image’u Kiss: dystans, dobra zabawa, genialne show. No i muzyka, która na całe szczęście nie została przyćmiona przez te wszystkie bajery. Co ciekawe panowie, którzy mają na karku po 70 lat sprawiali wrażenie młodzieniaszków (co oni biorą?). I najważniejsze: czy Paul śpiewał z taśmy? Odpowiedź brzmi: nie. Nie i jeszcze raz nie. Natychmiast dało się usłyszeć „zjechane” trasą gardło. Z czasem się rozśpiewał i mniej więcej od „Lick it up” śpiewał już bez pokoncertowej chrypy. Oczywiście zdarzały się dłuższe przerwy między utworami na złapanie oddechu i przy okazji na złapanie kontaktu z fenomenalną tego wieczoru publicznością, tzw. „Kiss Army” (która przyjechała z najdalszych zakątków Polski i nie tylko). Muzycy nie stronią od bardzo bliskiego kontaktu ze swoimi fanami – najlepiej jest wtedy, gdy publiczność zgromadzona w dalekich miejscach hali również może z bliska podziwiać „upiorny” make up. Tutaj z pomocą przyszła zainstalowana w strefie reżyserki mała scenka, na którą za pomocą kolejki linowej nad głowami publiczności przedostał się Paul Stanley, by odśpiewać chóralnie chyba dwa największe kissowe hity: „Love gun” oraz „I was made for lovin’ you”. Nie zabrakło także specjalnych wysięgników dla Gene „Demona” Simmonsa, jak i Tommiego Thayera. Nie byłoby koncertu Kiss także bez niesamowitej (jednej z najlepszych, jakie do tej pory słyszałem) solówki na perkusji w wykonaniu Erica Singera, którego zestaw także podnosił się na specjalnej platformie. Nie tylko zresztą Eric miał swoje pięć minut. Każdy z muzyków przedstawił bowiem swoje mini-show, a najlepsze miał chyba Gene Simmons (na szczęście nie było ono na poziomie zeszłorocznego prywatnego urodzinowego występu dla jednego z fanów). To co wyprawiał na swoim basie sprawiło, że nie pierwszy raz miałem ciarki na plecach, a szczęki nie zbierałem z podłogi, bo leżała tam już aż do końca koncertu. Podczas swojego sola Gene został uniesiony na platformie znacznie wyżej, niż na początku koncertu. Był oczywiście długi jęzor, plucie sztuczną krwią i zaśpiewany spod sufitu „God of thunder” z towarzystwem kilkunastu ekranów, na których kołysała się śpiewająca twarz Gene’a. Jedyną tego wieczoru balladą była oczywiście „Beth”, grana na fortepianie przez Erica Singera, który wraz z nim wyjechał spod sceny. Karnawałowy nastrój dopełniły potem już tylko „Crazy crazy night” (na publiczność spadały ogromne balony) oraz „Rock and roll all nite” (tony confetti). Cały koncert trwał równo dwie godziny i piętnaście minut. Przy tempie w jakim show się odbywało, to jestem pełen podziwu dla sił witalnych muzyków. Ale to też pokazuje, jakim motorem jest rockandroll. Coś mi jednak mówi w kościach, że to nie był jedyny koncert, jaki Kiss dał w naszym kraju i (może na 50-lecie grupy…?) powrócą niebawem z tym całym cyrkiem. Bo to przecież emocje, które się pamięta przez lata. Tak też było i tym razem, a ten koncertowy wieczór zapamiętam jako jeden z najlepszych na jakich byłem (a było już tego trochę).
